Developing solar in SADC
Although supplying high-quality, reliable solar power to all areas of Africa is no mean feat, this is a particularly challenging task for the South African Development Community (SADC) regions.
Because 77% of people in sub-Saharan Africa do not have access to electricity — a figure which increased for the first time in 2020 since 2013 — developing solar facilities in SADC regions must solve different issues than in electrified countries.
Although electrification in some SADC regions, like Mauritius and Zimbabwe, for instance, is relatively high, less than 20% of the population in Madagascar and the Democratic Republic of Congo have access to electricity.
So, rather than solving the issue of intermittent power caused by the load shedding crisis, a serious problem for most of the South African population — SADC regions need solar to gain access to electricity altogether, making sufficient solar capabilities is a matter of urgency in SADC areas.
Plus, with the continent already facing more severe side effects of climate change than many other parts of the world, including water stress, extreme weather and economic stagnation, the need to electrify SADC regions becomes more pressing every year.
